Goliath Visual Space is pleased to present Subliminal Divisions, a two-person
exhibition of works by Suzanne Anker and Astrid Bowlby. Structured as
a visual dialogue between two artists, Subliminal Divisions opens on
April 16th and continues through May 9th. An opening reception
will be held on Friday, April 16 from 6-9 PM in conjunction with the
Williamsburg Gallery Associations Third Friday.
Employing simple sets of primary units, Anker and Bowlby build complex
structures, both conceptually and in real space. Each artist questions
the status of the "whole" in fundamental ways. Both
introduce concepts of fluidity and mutability into the presentation
of solid-seeming entities by metaphorically shifting nature’s
infinite variations and permutations, Suzanne Anker creates sculpture
and prints from science-based data.
She employs the visualizing techniques available through high technology
simulation, such as the microscope and MRI scans. Chromosomes,
(which have become her signature icon,) are microscopic representations
of life’s genetic script. In this exhibition they share morphological
resonance with other symmetrical forms: the butterfly and the brain.
Corporeality, as a code-script is re-viewed as a shifting set of interchangeable
parts.
Astrid Bowlby’s work also acknowledges biological systems of growth
and form. Based on assemblages of single units, Bowlby’s unique
parts are made by hand. Her detailed drawings are realized with
a fine point technical pen. They resemble cell division as seen through
microscopes or some celestial collision as seen through telescopes.
The conversion from micro to macro are considered simultaneously in
either direction.
Suzanne
Anker is a visual artist and theorist. She is Chair of the Art
History department at the School of Visual Arts. Her work has
been shown nationally and internationally including the J.P. Getty Museum
