works
by Dean Brown / James Cullinane April 6 -April 28, 2002 Opening reception: April 6, Saturday, 7pm -9pm |
| Goliath Visual Space is
pleased to present imago, new site-specific installation works by Dean
Brown and James Cullinane, who bring you illusionistic environments
by unexpected means. James Cullinane's large-scale work is achieved by painstakingly inserting thousands of thumbtacks into a tilted wall to form two giant, 10-foot prepubescent boys fighting over a miscellaneous sack. An optical and spatial tension emerges from the visual shift between the intricate constellation of thumbtacks and the giant, looming images of the boys. Found bricks that once formed the base of a building are the foundation of Dean Brown's latest work. Projecting a family tree over evenly dispersed bricks, the artist explores the interplay between concrete and conceptual structures. The disjointed placement of the bricks on the floor, which no longer support anything, echoes the broken diagram of a family tree. From one ideal perspective everything lines up, but from any other, the image is altered and breaks apart. The juxtaposition between the abstract and tangible is prevalent throughout this artist's work. Both artists use visual and physical dislocation as an approach to creating works of psychological resonance. By skewing our perception, these works begin to trigger parts of the unconscious, and enable references and experiences to emerge into a conscious state. imago: Psychology. An often idealized image of a person, usually a parent, formed in childhood and persisting unconsciously into adulthood. |
