Visual Space
is pleased to present two emerging installation
artists
Iván
Pérez and Mariusz Olszewski.
Space
I: Iván
Pérez
Iván Pérez
creates photographic, installation and video works that respond to the
social and environmental circumstances of a given city or locale. Employing
image fragments and layering techniques, Pérez deftly frames
human expressions and residues found within contemporary settings. The
exhibition will include large-format photographs and video works that
use tourism as a context for exploring modes of observation. By reconfiguring
the visual relationship of visitors to “attractions” in
sites such as the Museum of Natural History and the Bronx Zoo, the works
create a subtle matrix of gazes perpetuated by the viewer.
Iván Pérez is a 2004 artist-in-residence
with the International Studio and Curatorial Program in New York He
was trained at the International Center of Photography (New York), the
Aki School of Find Arts (Enschede, Netherlands), and the University
of Castilla (La Mancha, Spain). His work has been exhibited widely in
solo and group exhibitions and video festivals in Spain, the Netherlands
and the United States.
Space II: Mariusz Olszewski
Mariusz Olszewski
uses the structure and function of language as a departure point for
the creation of sculptural works and installations. By breaking language
apart into its various components –phrases, words, letters and
letter fragments– and placing them strategically within a space,
he creates works that mingle the perception of external space with an
internal linguistic process. For this exhibition, Olszewski will create
a new wall painting and an installation in a darkened space that may
be navigated through the act of piecing together text --as pure form,
as communication, and as a vehicle for the viewer’s own associations.
Mariusz Olszewski is an installation artist
from Lodz, Poland. His work has been presented in numerous exhibitions
in Europe and the United States at venues including the Newhouse Center
for Contemporary Art (New York), Wschodnia Gallery (Lodz, Poland) and
Arist Project (Cardiff, UK). Most recently, his work was featured in
En Route, an international site-specific exhibition staged
in Spain, Poland and Germany.
