Visual Space
is pleased to present two emerging installation
artists
Malin Abrahamsson and Akimitsu Sadoi.
Both
artists' installations are formed by the placement of flat and sculptural
works within a space, where the space between pieces becomes just as
important as the work. The two-person show opens on Friday, May 21 and
continues through Sunday, June 6, 2004. An opening reception will be
held on Friday, MAY 21 from 7-9 PM in conjunction with the Williamsburg
Gallery Association's Third Friday events.
Space I: Malin Abrahamsson
Using combined images from natural and urban environments, Malin Abrahamsson
forms a bridge between her previous home, Northern Sweden, and her current
home, Staten Island. The installation is a balance between small and
large works, constructed of temporary wall paintings and works on wood
and paper. The space becomes the pedestal for the work, which includes
materials and imagery ranging from personal to impersonal, natural to
synthetic. Images form a bridge between the projected past home and
the present home -what is remembered and what is now.
Space II: Akimitsu Sadoi
"The inspiration for this project was quite simple and unexpected.
A simple graphical pattern made of small dots, forming a circle of radiating
lines. It looked as though the dots were emitting lights....."
From this simple starting point, Akimitsu Sadoi creates extremely complicated
but perfect visual gateways that allow the viewer to escape into his
or her own personalized universe. Through the strict and precise repetition
of chips, diodes, Aztec-graphic circuit boards, and hundreds of LEDs
that dance in hypnotic patterns, Sadoi's installation makes the human
eye tap in to its unconscious. Akimitsu Sadoi has heightened a basic
visual property to create a device that allows for innumerable experiences
and results.
