Rene Trevino
I feel compelled to make beautiful, thoughtful, positive gay art to counter all the hetero-normativity and homophobia that pervade the historical and current art world, and our society in general. The paintings and drawings are generally acrylic on Mylar or paper and often combine European wallpaper designs with Aztec imagery and silhouettes of virile hyper-masculine animals. I am also sewing pink American, Mexican, Spanish, and Texan flags and installing them in both gallery and real world situations. My work deals with my identity, particularly with my identity as a gay Latino male.
I paint and construct art objects that flirt with kitsch or camp, but are ultimately too elegant and heartfelt to be dismissed as such.
